Though SpongeBob SquarePants and his trusty friend Patrick won’t hit theaters until February next year, that’s not stopping the duo from celebrating Christmas and promoting their forthcoming adventure SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water. The big screen sequel takes our characters from the cartoon world underwater to the real world where they must track down the thief who stole the recipe for the Krabby Patty. In the real world, they get a whole new look and even get superpowers and become human-sized. But in this holiday greeting, they’re still tiny and just enjoying the holidays. Watch below! 2004’s The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie was a modest hit, but I don’t know if the character has the same popularity now. It’s been ten years, and the kids who watched SpongeBob are now teenagers or adults, so will they come for nostalgia? And has the character’s popularity even waned? I ask because his new movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water is a little over a month away, and it’s not being treated like much of an event. I never watched the show, but I think the character is fun, and I liked the first movie, so I’m hoping the sequel is just as ridiculous. Paramount Pictures is getting into the Christmas spirit today, debuting a brand new holiday greeting and new photos from The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Spongebob Squarepants (voiced by Tom Kenny) wishes fans a happy holiday season, while Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke) is seen in an uncomfortable position in this Christmas greeting. This follows special messages from Marvel Studios, Star Wars, The Babadook and Hotel Transylvania 2 that have debuted over the past few days. If that wasn’t enough, Paramount has also debuted new photos from this animated adventure, featuring Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) and the nefarious pirate Alameda Jack, portrayed in live action by Antonio Banderas. This live-action/CGI hybrid follows SpongeBob as he goes on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate.
